![]() ![]() Awesome Racing Car Designers and Talented Inventors required fast! Calling on creative players who can construct their very own cool car and drive it to victory. Dream Car Racing is a highly-stimulating, construction and car racing upgrade-based game for older kids & teens where you have to carefully and continuously build your ideal ‘monster car’, and test it out on increasingly challenging tracks. As well as being in the driver’s seat, you also get the opportunity to showcase your creative engineering talents as you constantly tinker with your car’s attributes, components, and performance levels in between each test drive. With virtual upgrades awarded through good race performance, a continuous circle of impressive mechanical mastery can transform your plodding little vehicle into a humongous hydraulic beast! Unleash your inner 'automobile designer' side as you utilize creative construction techniques and clever add-ons in order to tailor your machine to your exact modifications. Trial, error and learning from your mistakes and car deficiencies are the key to good race performance. For example, if you are struggling to get over a particular hill during a race, expand your booster capabilities for some extra oomph! Right then, it’s time to leave those other car designers staring at your dust! How to Play: There are two distinct elements to the game – the creative ‘Blueprint’ area, and the ‘Race’ area. At the ‘Blueprint’ stage, you create, upgrade, and alter your dream car, while the Race arena is used as a testing ground for your car’s capabilities as well as for earning virtual gold (which can be used to upgrade the car in between races). At the beginning of the game at the Blueprint stage, you have to add columns and beams to complete your initial car structure. Click and Drag beams using your computer mouse or touchpad, and attach them to the blue node areas on the already finished parts of the vehicle. When you think your car is ready for testing, click on the ‘Race’ button in the top right corner of the game screen. Here, you are brought to the track select screen (There are 7 tracks in total, and each must be unlocked through good performances).

You can control the difficulty of the game by the choice and number of words used: for very beginning readers, choose meaningful words that are visually distinctive: 'ghost', 'dark', 'sister', and keep the number of words low. For a more challenging game, include some words that are less distinctive: 'when', 'what', 'this', 'that', but be careful not to overwhelm the child. Variation 1 Instead of matching pairs, you can use rhyming pairs: look, book; dark, park. Variation 2 This game can also be used to build letter recognition and letter/sound association. Paste or draw simple pictures on one set of cards; and on the other set, print initial consonants to go with the pictures. For example, paste the picture of a dog on one card, and write the letter 'D' on a matching card. Note: This game can be adapted to use with older children, or more advanced readers: variations can include vocabulary practice such as using homonyms, (words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings: cent/scent; dear/deer, etc.) or contractions, (can't; cannot, etc.). Go fish This game is good for early fluent to fluent readers. To make Select ten to 20 words from a book (or books) the child is reading. Print the words clearly and boldly on separate 3x5 inch index cards, making pairs of each word. (Children may help by copying the words you write.) Two to four players can play this game. To play Shuffle and deal three to five cards to each player. Place the rest of the deck face down. Players take turns asking each other for a card to match one held in his or her hand. If the opponent has a matching card, it is given over, and the first player takes another turn. If the opponent does not have a match, he or she says 'Go Fish' and the player draws from the remaining deck of cards, and the next player takes a turn. Each time a player has a match, he or she reads the words, and puts down the pair, face up. Continue the game until the cards are all used up. Instead of matching words, rhyming words can be used. In this case, players ask for 'a word that sounds like 'night'.' At the end, the child can earn extra points by dictating or writing additional words that rhyme with the base words, or creating 'silly' sentences using the rhymes. Note: This game can be adapted to use with older children, or more advanced readers: variations can include vocabulary practice such as using homonyms (words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings: cent/scent; dear/deer, etc.), or contractions (can't; cannot, etc.). Give the kids commands to make animal sounds or move like animals. For example: Boots says, “Swing your trunk like an elephant.” Boots says, “Run like a Cheetah.” “Squeal like a monkey!” and so on. A variation of this is “Dora Dice” (pronounced dee-say) which is the word for “says” in Spanish. As in the classic game of Simon Says, the children take turns being “Dora” and direct the other guests to pretend to do Dora-like activities, such as hopping like a frog, swimming across a lake, climbing a rope and jumping over crocodiles, etc. Musical Sombreros This game is just like musical chairs, using one less Sombrero hat than there are children for each round. Place a pile of Sombreros on a table that the kids walk around while the music is playing. Once the music is turned off, the kids must scramble to put on a Sombrero hat. The kid left without a hat leaves the game, and the game continues with one less hat until there is one kid remaining who is the winner. Pin the Tail on Boots Just the same as “Pin the Tail on the Donkey”, but use Boots instead! Picture-Card Exploration Treasure Hunt If the kids love Dora, they’ll definitely love exploring like her (and of course to find a treasure!). This is a simple version that is excellent for pre-schoolers who may not read yet. Before the party, make 8-12 clue cards on individual 3×5 cards, and on each one draw or glue on a picture of something in your house or yard. Write the clue number in the top left corner of each card and hide the clues before the kids arrive, making sure the treasure stash is well hidden. When it’s time to play, gather all the kids around and hand out the first clue, telling them to find the object on the card (for example, if the first card shows a sandbox, then the kids will go there and find a second clue card with a cookie jar on it. Then, they’ll go to the cookie jar and find a third clue card with another object on it, etc.). The hunt continues until the kids find the stash of Dora the Explorer theme-related treasures that you’ve hidden (if you prefer to make the cake or cupcakes the treasure, put a picture of yourself on the last clue card. When the kids come running back to you, they’ll be ecstatic to see the treats that are waiting for them!! (For older children, write the name of each object in Spanish next to its picture for more fun). It can also be fun for the kids if every clue or every other clue they find a special favor like stickers or other small, theme-related favors. What’s in the Mochilla (Backpack)? Inside a backpack, place a few more objects than there are kids (use items with interesting shapes and textures that can also be prizes, like bubbles, yo-yo’s, bean bags, a ball, bracelets, crayons and small plastic animals). ![]() Play Victorian Parlour Games with a step by step guide from our Victorian Christmas experts.
